What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a progressive disease caused by bacteria in the mouth that damages the gums, bone, and other supporting structures of the teeth. Since this disease lurks below the gums, visible signs of periodontal disease may not be present until it is very advanced. Many pets do not show symptoms of problems until late in the disease. This is why early detection and preventative action is important.
